Job Summary:

The Director is responsible for the success of the preschool. She or he will ensure that there is a caring and safe learning environment for the children. Responsibilities shall include coordination and supervision of all program components such as; intellectual growth of young children, preventative health and social services, nutrition, staff development, community outreach, parent involvement in program operation, facilities management and accountability, office/front desk management. The Director shall consider, confer and consult with other Supervisory Staff and center staff to arrive at decision areas in which these persons may specialize; Demonstrate leadership qualities, mature judgement and the ability to  work cooperatively with people; ability to establish and maintain professional relationships and a sound educational program; to be articulate, pleasant and resourceful; Willingness to utilize training available to improve administrative and supervisory skills, as well as understanding of NYC DOH Article 47 and the DOE Department of Education, UPK compliance; Hiring, supervising and training of staff.
 

Responsibilities:

  1. Administrative

  • Assure compliance with NYC DOH Article 47 Codes and DOE UPK Regulations; Ensure that the program is within policy guidelines for licensing requirements

  • Carry out/establish policies on admission, attendance and fees.

  • Ensure that the children receive nutritious meals.

  • Prepare periodic reports on the status of the program.

  1. Executive Administration

  • Communicate with parents by e-mail, phone, formal and informal meetings and newsletters.

  • Solicit information periodically from families to determine satisfaction and improve the program.

  • Prepare and maintain the Parent Handbook containing procedures and policies; present recommendations to Executive Administrators for changes/improvement.

  • Participate in professional development workshops and classes. Participate on Committees (i.e. UPK Moving up ceremony).

  • Maintain a variety of records including registrations, permission slips, accident reports, medical records etc.

  • Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as, answering the telephone, running errands, picking up supplies, conducting activities and helping set-up for events as necessary.

  • Perform related duties as required by Round-the-Clock Nursery Inc.

  1. Supervision & Personnel

  • Recruit, select and hire staff to run the preschool program in compliance with NYC Regulations (Article 47); refer new candidates to Human Resources.

  • Supervise and formally evaluate all preschool staff after probationary period and annually.

  • Plan and provide staff development opportunities and training.

  • Provide written staff observations to backup evaluations.

  • Hold staff, team and individual meetings on a regular basis.

  • Ensure that all staff is following their educational requirements and study plans.

  • Ensure that staff maintain appropriate work schedules and review their time sheets.

  • Take disciplinary measures and actions wherever needed in an appropriate time to maintain the program’s integrity.

 

  1. Curriculum and Instruction

 

  • Collaborate with and supervise teachers in planning instructional activities and lessons which promote developmentally appropriate children learning.

  • Oversee and formally evaluate the curriculum and the instructions of the staff.

  • Teach, educate and monitor children as needed (Provide coverage as needed or model teaching techniques).

  • Procure and organize instructional equipment and supplies.

  • Serve as a classroom assistant as needed to provide proper child to adult ratio coverage.

 

  1. Financial

 

  • Order supplies and equipment for program as needed.

  • Supervise Receptionist/Front Desk staff in Fundraising for the program.

  • Fundraising.

 

 

 

  1. Facilities and Safety

 

  • Monitor the safety of students, staff and the facilities.

  • Regularly inspect equipment and play areas to ensure safety and cleanliness.

  • Procure and use all required safety equipment, safety/health logs and manuals in the center and trains staff on the use of them.

  • Review safety issues at each staff meeting.

  • Ensure that all staff is CPR & First Aid Certified; and that all screenings are updated as per regulations.

 

  1. Marketing and Development

 

  • Promote the positive image of the preschool and advertise as needed.

  • Familiarize self with resources of the community.

  • Organize a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC).

               

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Valid New York State Teacher’s Certificate in Early Childhood Education (N-6 or B-2), MA/MS in Education and at least 5 years group teacher’s experience, plus academic course work pertinent to the appropriate age levels.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational, leadership and managerial skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to young children, staff and parents.

  • Knowledge of NYC Article 47 and UPK Common Core Standards.
